Brief Introduction
Thanks to continuous breakthroughs in laser technology, laser cutting has become a mainstream solution for aluminum processing. Compared with traditional machining, laser cutting delivers stable processing results, faster cutting speeds and higher overall efficiency. It effectively shortens production cycles and lowers long-term manufacturing costs.
Nowadays, three mainstream laser cutting machines are available for aluminum cutting: CO₂ laser cutters, fiber laser cutters and lamp-pumped YAG laser cutters. We analyze their pros, cons and applicable scenarios below for your reference.
1. CO₂ Laser Cutting Machine
CO₂ lasers feature a wavelength of 10.64 μm, which is easily absorbed by non-metallic materials. It achieves premium cutting effects on wood, acrylic, PP plastic, glass and other non-metals.
However, when processing highly reflective metals like aluminum, copper and silver, most laser energy will be reflected off the material surface, drastically reducing cutting performance.
Low photoelectric conversion efficiency (only around 10%)
High auxiliary operating costs: heavy power consumption, frequent nitrogen replacement and high cooling system expenses
Limited aluminum cutting thickness: maximum 3mm only
These drawbacks make CO₂ lasers an unpopular choice for aluminum fabrication.
2. Fiber Laser Cutting Machine
Fiber laser is an advanced new-generation laser technology globally. With a compact footprint and lower gas consumption than CO₂ equipment, its 1.06 μm wavelength fits metal processing perfectly.
IPG continuous fiber lasers are the most widely used option with stable performance, yet they come with obvious downsides:
High upfront machine price; few competitive laser suppliers keep market prices elevated
High maintenance cost: the whole laser module must be replaced once damaged
3. Lamp-Pumped YAG Laser Cutting Machine
YAG lasers share the same 1.06 μm wavelength as fiber lasers, ideal for all kinds of metal cutting. This mature laser technology has been globally recognized and applied for decades.
Excellent beam quality and pulse output, perfectly matching metal cutting demands
Higher energy utilization efficiency
Low initial purchase cost and daily operation cost
These advantages attract a large number of metal processing customers.
Industry Reality of YAG Equipment
Although many factories produce YAG laser cutters, very few manufacturers can stably cut aluminum plates. Most aluminum-capable YAG devices only rely on air blowing for cutting, with cutting speed and precision far behind high-power fiber laser machines.
